Sunrise of New Dorp
Two distinct neighborhoods—one for memory care, one for assisted living—define Sunrise of New Dorp, where residents stay connected despite different care needs. Individual rooftop patios serve each memory care section, yet a central bistro with a stone fireplace brings everyone together, illustrating the design's balance of specialized support and shared activities. The four-story Staten Island development shows how architecture can eliminate traditional barriers between levels of care while preserving essential private spaces.
Design for Different Care Needs
The 85,000-square-foot building includes 45 assisted living units and 50 memory care suites. The design team developed residential spaces that adapt to residents' evolving requirements. Each suite features specialized finishes and emergency response systems in a layout that enables efficient staff support.
The central bistro acts as a social nucleus, with its slab stone fireplace and seating configurations suited to residents' varying physical abilities. Clear sightlines throughout shared areas support independent navigation while allowing staff to monitor and assist when needed.
Outdoor Access by Design
Several accessible outdoor areas enhance residents' quality of life. An enclosed courtyard spans the building's width, incorporating a pergola and varied seating options that accommodate physical needs and social preferences. Four separate rooftop patios—each paired with a specific memory care section—let residents enjoy fresh air under direct staff observation.
Spaces for Daily Life
A theater and boutique nail and hair salon enrich residents' routines. Furniture throughout shared areas combines ergonomic support with aesthetic appeal, addressing mobility requirements without institutional appearances.
Location Benefits
From its New Dorp location, residents access the broader New York City region via the Staten Island Expressway to Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Jersey City. Parks and the Midland Beach boardwalk provide recreational destinations, while Northwell Hospital and nearby medical offices ensure healthcare accessibility.
Building Community Connections
Next door, New Dorp High School creates opportunities for meaningful interactions across generations. The school's National Honor Society prepares welcome materials for incoming residents, establishing relationships that develop through ongoing shared activities.
Living Experience
Beatrice Rogers, whose career spanned radio and television advertising, selected Sunrise of New Dorp for its light-filled interior and opportunities for social engagement. The open design facilitates conversations among residents and staff—supporting Rogers' enthusiasm for communication and personal connections.
Through architectural solutions that anticipate diverse needs, the building provides appropriate care support alongside opportunities for independence. Each design element serves both practical requirements and quality of life, resulting in an environment where residents receive necessary assistance while pursuing their interests and relationships.
