The dining hall at Cross Creek serves as the heart of this Charlestown senior living community. Working closely with residents, the design team crafted a series of distinct dining environments within the building's original architecture. By dividing the large open space into more personal zones, adding varied seating options, and refining lighting and acoustics, they created an atmosphere that encourages both intimate conversations and casual gatherings. The transformed venue draws praise from residents who take pride in sharing it with visitors.

Resident Involvement in Design

Residents helped shape decisions from the beginning. Their evaluations of furniture options and color selections guided design choices during regular planning meetings. Viewing windows kept residents connected to construction progress, while staff members contributed insights that refined both kitchen and dining area functions.

Creating Intimate Spaces

Translucent resin panels and custom millwork define distinct dining areas while preserving visual connections. Between existing masonry columns, banquette seating forms natural gathering spots, with lowered ceilings and purposeful lighting establishing the character of each zone. Original skylights illuminate the space, their natural light filtered by suspended ceiling elements.

A bar and lounge overlooks mature woodland, offering residents a casual dining alternative. Fresh paint colors complement the original wood trim, while wall coverings introduce texture. Each dining zone maintains its identity through deliberate material choices that transition smoothly into neighboring areas.

Improving Sound and Light

Several integrated solutions address acoustics. Sound-absorbing wall components combine with suspended ceiling elements to control noise. Tables now seat four to six guests instead of eight to ten, making conversation more comfortable. An acoustical engineer's analysis determined optimal partition heights and materials.

The lighting plan preserves existing features while introducing new elements. Original decorative fixtures received upgraded bulbs and controls. Additional pendant lights and wall sconces provide layered illumination, while suspended ceiling elements manage natural light from skylights, eliminating glare while maintaining outdoor views.

Enhancing Service

Modified kitchen entry points improve workflow efficiency. Beverage stations and cart storage optimize staff movement, while table service has replaced self-service stations. New workstations at kitchen entries support smooth service delivery.

Meeting Objectives

The renovation succeeds through specific improvements: varied seating promotes social connections, enhanced acoustics enable comfortable conversations, and the bar area provides dining flexibility. Phased construction maintained uninterrupted meal service. The completed space aligns with residents' preferences while supporting excellent service delivery.
