Edgefield County Law Enforcement Center
Edgefield County's law enforcement center brings together its once-scattered public safety operations—from sheriff and emergency dispatch to courts and detention—into a unified complex designed for the next half century. Set on a 43-acre site that will eventually include a community park, the center triples the county's detention capacity while blending civic architecture with its operational requirements.

Site Response and Organization
The building occupies a high point that slopes naturally toward the entrance, creating visual presence while reducing site disturbance. A curved entrance road lined with magnolias, live oaks, and azaleas creates an arrival sequence that respects the regional landscape. The northern orientation of offices and public spaces maximizes natural light while minimizing glare, allowing extensive glazing without window treatments.
The facility divides into two distinct operational zones through separate entrances—one for the sheriff's office and another for magistrate court and detention. This separation manages visitor flow effectively, preventing overcrowding in the sheriff's lobby from court proceedings and visitation. A brick wall screens the secure sallyport from public view, preserving the center's civic presence.
Design Integration
The design references the historic Edgefield County Courthouse through materials and proportions. White metal panels at the columns offer a contemporary interpretation of the courthouse's classical stone base, while red brick establishes permanence and civic identity. Each entrance maintains its distinct identity through varied massing and material application, while sharing core architectural vocabulary.
Double-height spaces and expansive northern glazing create bright, open public areas that maintain security through high-reflectivity glass. The interior design emphasizes clean lines and durable finishes, with strategic use of color to define different functional zones. Public lobbies feature soaring ceilings and abundant natural light, creating welcoming spaces that balance openness with security requirements.
Security and Operations
The second-floor command center overlooks multiple housing units through slanted glass, enabling efficient staffing and complete visibility of inmate areas. This elevated position integrates with over 400 security cameras across the facility. A backup generator ensures all building systems remain operational for up to one week during emergencies. The detention areas include recreation spaces covered with specialized mesh screening systems that admit natural light while preventing contraband transfer.
Staff and Support Areas
A 4,800-square-foot multipurpose building behind the secure perimeter houses training spaces, fitness equipment, and staff amenities. The building can be subdivided for simultaneous activities using a movable wall system. Break rooms throughout the main facility give staff proper spaces for meals, improving daily operations.
Public Spaces
The magistrate's courtroom integrates custom woodwork that surpasses typical institutional standards while meeting functional requirements. Public areas incorporate ballistic glass and controlled access points without compromising the architectural expression of openness and transparency.
The integration of these elements creates a facility that fulfills its public safety mission while respecting its civic role. By addressing operational needs while maintaining architectural excellence, the design provides a framework for current requirements while anticipating future growth.
