Johnston County Public Safety Center
As one of North Carolina’s fastest growing states, Johnston County’s need for larger and more centralized public safety space was a top priority. Moseley partnered with the county to bring this need to fruition by designing a new 54,000-square-foot public safety facility, completed in 2023. The new facility meets immediate space needs and merges resources into a single, spacious building.
Expanding and Streamlining Resources
Population growth leads to more emergency calls, requiring upgraded facilities for law enforcement and emergency management services. These services had also outgrown their original location in Johnston County’s historic courthouse. The new two-story public safety facility moved the sheriff’s office, 911 center, and emergency management services, addressing their space needs while alleviating overcrowding in the courthouse.
The new building houses the sheriff’s department, the criminal investigation division, patrol, narcotics, and fire and emergency services on the first floor; emergency management and E-911 on the second floor, where they can operate from one location; and evidence storage and processing in an adjacent one-story, 9,400-square-foot pre-engineered metal building. The facility also provides a protected employee parking area.
Community-Minded Design
The public safety facility is on the same campus as the new Johnston County detention center, a project also completed by Moseley. Prioritizing the safety of county residents and staff, the sheriff’s proximity to the detention center will enable faster emergency response times between facilities. Consolidating public safety services into a new, larger building on this campus also creates a central hub of resources for county residents. The result promotes convenience, accessibility, and a greater sense of safety among community members.
