Georgetown Detention Center
Addressing a critical need for improved correctional infrastructure, Georgetown County has begun construction of a detention center that will reshape the region's approach to public safety. This project, the largest public undertaking in the county's history, demonstrates a commitment to improving the quality of life for residents and ensuring the safety and efficiency of its correctional facilities.
Facility Design and Capacity
The 85,800-square-foot facility will hold up to 265 inmates with core spaces designed to accommodate up to 500. The efficient layout features two eight-bed segregation units, three 47-bed medium-security units, and a 48-bed dormitory arranged around a raised control tower. A dedicated wing for female residents provides 51 beds, ensuring appropriate separation and specialized accommodations.
Essential Support Services
Beyond inmate housing, the facility incorporates crucial administrative and public service spaces. These include intake and release areas, a magistrate courtroom, public defender's office, coroner's office, and morgue. A multipurpose training room serves a dual function as a hurricane shelter, complete with showers and toilet facilities to support county residents during severe weather events.
Advanced Security Systems
Advanced technology throughout the building enhances operational safety and efficiency. The facility features an advanced security electronic system with high-resolution cameras, sophisticated access control mechanisms, touch screen monitors, and two-way communication infrastructure between inmates and staff, setting new standards for correctional facility operations.
Rehabilitation and Community Impact
The project's centerpiece is a 4,535-square-foot building dedicated to the sheriff's re-entry program, reflecting a strong commitment to rehabilitation and reduced recidivism. This highly successful initiative provides comprehensive training in valuable trades such as HVAC, welding, and construction. The program's track record speaks volumes: since its inception nearly two decades ago, it has achieved nearly 100% employment for participants upon release and maintained a recidivism rate of less than 1%, demonstrating the facility's role in creating positive community change.
