Ben Merlo joined our Richmond office this summer as a mechanical engineering intern, working primarily in our K-12 sector. Originally from Springfield, Virginia, he will begin his junior year at Virginia Tech this fall. He enjoys the pragmatic aspect of engineering and, through his internship, is learning how to apply and hone his skills to achieve practical project solutions.
Why did you choose to study mechanical engineering?
I always preferred math and science classes in high school, and I wanted to learn how to use those skills to solve real world problems. Mechanical engineering is a broad major that allows me to explore a bunch of different fields to find what I enjoy.
What building typologies are you most interested in?
I am currently most interested in residential building types.
Is this the first time you’ve done an internship?
Yes, this is my first internship.
How did you learn about the internship?
I was connected to the company through my mom, Molly Merlo, who works as a project manager for the K-12 sector.
If you had to describe your Moseley intern experience thus far using three words, what would they be?
Productive, community, and Revit.
What are some of the assignments you’ve been given?
All of my projects have been HVAC renovation jobs, which involve a lot of modeling existing ductwork in Revit. I have worked on a school, an animal shelter, and I recently started working on a recreation facility.
What assignment have you enjoyed the most so far?
My favorite assignment has been the animal shelter because I was able to go on a site visit and see firsthand what I was trying to model.
Have you encountered any challenges during your internship?
I think the biggest challenge was learning a new routine. It was very different from what school usually looks like.
How has the actual experience differed from your expectations of it?
I honestly didn’t know what to expect going in, but I have enjoyed how friendly and supportive everyone is at the office.
Have you worked on any projects outside the K-12 sector?
Yes, the animal shelter and recreation facility are both projects outside of the K-12 sector.
Have any of your assignments required you to collaborate with any architects or non-architects involved in design (ex: other engineers, interior designers, sustainability coordinators, construction contract administrators)?
Yes, I have been able to collaborate on multiple assignments with architects to coordinate plans and make sure models are accurate.
What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned or the best advice you’ve received during the internship so far?
You should always ask questions! People are always happy to help out.
