University of South Carolina Upstate, Library Expansion
The University of South Carolina Upstate has enhanced its library through a 24,000-square-foot, two-story addition and 3,000 square feet of renovated space. The expanded facility establishes a design approach that will shape future campus development.
Building Design
The expanded facility blends with existing campus architecture through selected materials, including brick exteriors and precast concrete columns that match the original structure. Floor-to-ceiling windows, accented by locally sourced wood, bring fresh design elements while filling interior spaces with natural light. This daylight improves alertness and well-being among library users.
Student Engagement Through Design
The design emphasizes visibility, with extensive glazing that displays academic life within. Through these transparent facades, passersby observe study sessions and group work, creating an atmosphere that inspires both current and prospective students. In areas requiring more privacy, such as ground-floor tutoring spaces, a frit pattern maintains focus while adding visual interest to the exterior.
Enhanced Campus Integration
A new entrance improves accessibility and strengthens connections to both parking areas and the Jeffersonian quad. The expansion extends beyond the building, creating an enriched outdoor environment with study areas, a sculpture garden, and landscaping that coordinates with the existing campus grounds.
Improved Learning Spaces
The renovation addresses current academic needs through expanded study areas, a new digital learning lab, and dedicated space for USC Upstate's archives. A reading room adapts for multiple uses, supporting both quiet study and special events such as exhibitions and presentations.
Multipurpose Facilities
A second-level glass connector joins the original library and new addition, providing access to expanded services including a student success center, career management resources, the Center for International Education, and an athletic study hall. Three adjustable classrooms include folding partitions, allowing spaces to accommodate small classes or combine for larger events. The addition includes a café and various study and lounge areas, encouraging informal learning and collaboration.
"
The addition will address the growing needs of our expanding student body while providing cutting-edge space for innovation, research, and collaborative learning...This project is a testament to our commitment to excellence, and I’m confident it will inspire all who pass through the library door.
